Review: Hyatt Vacation Club Pinon Pointe

In my first ever post in the One Card, One Trip series, I wrote about visiting Sedona, Arizona and in particular the Hyatt Vacation Club at Pinon Pointe. We were looking for a quick getaway this May and, drawing inspiration from my post, wanted to check it out.

As our travel dates approached, the weather looked really bad in Sedona; rain, lows in the 30’s and high winds. Not wanting to escape to worse weather than St. Louis, we decided to push the trip out to early June and fortunately, the flights were actually cheaper (Southwest cash rate with Companion Pass) and there was still off-peak availability for the hotel both for studio rooms and 1-bedroom villas.

How we booked it

We were able to book 3 nights in a 1-bedroom villa for 21k Hyatt points per night (off-peak) vs a cash price of ~ $1000 after all taxes and fees for a decent (but lower than average) value of 1.6 cents per point. With this property being limited participation in World of Hyatt I had seen several reports about not getting the resort fees waived but I am happy to report those were waived on our stay. In addition, we received a nice bottle of wine as a welcome amenity because the (original) trip was to celebrate my wife’s birthday.

Overall impressions

Would we stay here again? Absolutely. Sedona is super beautiful, and the Hyatt Pinon Pointe is a great home base to explore the great outdoor activities this area has to offer. The villa was spacious and clean, and although some of the fixtures were a bit dated, the southwest styling is pretty timeless.

Pros
:

Views are amazing throughout the property.

Location: many restaurants and shops within walking distance.

Very spacious villa with full kitchen and large balcony.

Staff were all friendly and the concierge was helpful.

Large workout facility and game room with kids activities.

Cons:

2nd floor room still required steps down from the main level and required going up to top level from parking lot and then back down).

Pool area had limited umbrellas so mid-afternoon it was sometimes challenging to find a space with an umbrella for some shade.

Not always easy to get parking near our unit as it was close to the shops that were effectively on property.

As a vacation club property, no breakfast, daily housekeeping, or other elite recognition.

TL;DR: The Hyatt Vacation Club Pinon Pointe is a great home base to explore all of the wonderful outdoor activities that Sedona, Arizona has to offer. While not a tremendous value at ~ 1.6cpp vs the cash rate during our visit, we enjoyed the spacious villa and amenities for our early June visit.
